Honest Restaurant, which serves Indian street food, recently opened a location in Hicksville, though diners are not required to stand on the street to eat. The eatery, which is on South Broadway, serves vegetarian Gujarati dishes.
The restaurant's signature dishes include bhaji pav and Honest pulav. The former is a savory vegetable curry accompanied by glossy buns, and the latter is spicy, buttered basmati rice sautéed on a griddle, known as a tawa.
Prashant Shah co-owns the restaurant along with Vijesh Patel, the chef. The pair also run Vatan in New York City, Raju's Egg & Veg, also in Hicksville, and a second Honest in Jersey City.
Honest, as well as Raju's, started in 1975 in Ahmedabad, India, as a street cart serving Gujarati food. There are now dozens of restaurants in India, along with another four in the U.S. The one that just opened in Hicksville is the fifth.
In addition to their signature dishes, Honest will serve bhakri pizzas, which, as the name suggests, are the Indian version of pizza. The menu also has both Gujarati and Punjabi comfort and street food, including various curry and kebab dishes. Sandwiches, small plates, soups, breads, and some Indo-Chinese dishes are also available.
Owners of new restaurants sometimes work with a flyer printing company to create a handout, including coupons, inviting new patrons to try a meal.
