Special fellowship awarded to Las Vegas gardeners

Ciara Byrne and Kim MacQuarrie, who started the Green Our Planet gardening program, have recently been honored as Obama Foundation fellows. The program, which began in Las Vegas, has enabled the creation of 166 gardens around the state.

The fellowship will enable Byrne and MacQuarrie to plan the rollout of the Green Our Planet gardening program throughout the country. This was the focus of the Obamas when they started the fellowship which was to select organizations that were having a great influence within their communities and were looking to expand what they were doing on a national level.

Promoting such programs throughout the country can be done using flyer printing.

Byrne and MacQuarrie were documentary filmmakers who were making a film about furthering any kind of green project in their local community. They needed to raise money for this film about creating a school garden but then found themselves getting requests from many other schools looking to build gardens.

Curricula related to science, technology, engineering, and math to align with the gardens was then requested by the teachers, after which Byrne and MacQuarrie received a grant enabling teachers to write these curricula.

Soon thereafter, there were between 30 and 40 gardens around the Las Vegas Valley and Byrne and MacQuarrie were no longer filmmakers but became passionate about fostering the connection between students and the environment.
