Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, known professionally as Sting, is a songwriter, singer, musician, and actor. From 1977 until 1984, he was the bassist, songwriter, and frontman for The Police, during which time the group released five albums, all of which were successful.
Sting went solo in 1985 and has achieved a huge success, though his music is difficult to classify. His albums illustrate the wide range of his subject matter. His first solo album, “The Dream of the Blue Turtles,” was based on a dream and the title of his fourth solo album, “Ten Summoner’s Tales,” refers to a character in Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales.”
In his career, both with The Police and on his own, Sting has won 17 Grammys, including winning Song of the Year for the single “Every Breath You Take.” He has also been showered with many other awards and nominations, including an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and four Oscar nominations in the category Best Original Song.
