Now that Project Neon, the largest public works project in the history of Nevada to widen close to four miles of Interstate 15 in downtown Las Vegas, will be completed this summer, transportation officials are looking to the next major undertaking.
The Nevada Department of Transportation is planning to rebuild part of the elevated road of U.S. Highway 95. It was built in 1968 and Tony Illia, a spokesman for the Transportation Department, said that it is in poor condition. There are many cracks in the deck, and rehabilitation and repair costs are increasing.
Known as the Downtown Access project, it would demolish and replace a bridge in addition to rebuilding part of the highway. Included in the project would be the addition of lanes on the highway, creating a high-occupancy vehicle exit, and building ramps so that access to the downtown area is improved.
This project would be the second such major road construction around the Spaghetti Bowl in recent years. Officials from the Transportation Department said there is no timeline or cost for the project, as it is only in the planning stages. However, it does expect to begin construction in 2021.
The community can be informed of such projects through the planning and construction process, and kept in the loop about their progress and effect on traffic, through various printing services.
