A new airport is being considered for the Ivanpah Valley by the commissioners in Clark County just south of Las Vegas.
The airport would be built on undeveloped federal land that is 6,000 acres in size between Jean and Primm along Interstate 15. Rosemary Vassiliadis, aviation director for the county, said that the population is growing, more resort hotels are opening, and more people are coming to see football games, making this airport important for supplementing the traffic at McCarran International Airport.
She added that last year was the busiest for the airport with a record 48.5 million passengers and it is necessary to prepare for the expected growth. Commissioner Jim Gibson commented that the development of the airport would have significant economic impact on the area.
First, an environmental impact study will be conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Bureau of Land Management. This process will begin early next year, take about two years to compete, and cost between $5m and $7m.
A favorable result from the study would enable the county to receive an additional 17,000 acres of land surrounding the airport at no cost for the development of commercial and industrial uses.
Various kinds of promotional products can be used to make those in the area aware of such developments and the impact and benefits to their communities.
