The families chose to dedicate the trees as memorials to departed loved ones. The ceremony took place in Sayen Park and saw the families planting redbud trees in honor of Joey Angiolino and John Quinn, a US Navy Veteran.
Along with planting the trees, the families also put up plaques in honor of their loved ones’ memories. Speaking to NJ Advance Media, Mayor Yaede stated:
"There is no better opportunity than Arbor Day to celebrate [Hamilton's Tree City USA designation].
"I am also proud that we continue our longstanding memorial program, which allows residents the ability to purchase trees and plaques to honor the memories of their loved ones."
Cities can use Banners to highlight trees that are planted as part of Arbor Day ceremonies or in memory of others. For some, planting trees in memory of their loved ones seems like the perfect way to honor them. Patricia Quinn, the widow of John, noted that her son-in-law is a member of the Shade Tree Commission. She was happy to have planted the tree on Arbor Day, since it will help everyone to remember her husband.
