There's more to being a firefighter than putting out house fires and helping to rescue cats from trees. A recent award ceremony recognizing the effects of firefighters in Trenton, near Hamilton, acknowledged that fact.
Demonstrating just how much dedication and bravery goes into being a firefighter, two companies left the ceremony in the middle in response to a fire call.
At the ceremony in Trenton, the recognitions included several valor awards, united commendations and Firefighter of the Year.
The title of Firefighter of the Year went to Nick Candelori, of Engine 1. George Espinal, who dives with Rescue Company 1, received a valor award after he was able to locate a man drowning in the Delaware and Raritan Canal in December of last year.
Ryan Aquilino, a firefighter, also received a valor award. He saved a woman who nearly fell off of a bridge into the Delaware River. Aquilino was able to grab the woman and pull her back.
Two firefighters from Ladder Company 2, Miguel Ortiz and John Snee, received valor awards for rescuing a man from a burning home in July of last year. The pair were getting ready to enter the building when Snee saw the man inside. They were able to pull him out in the nick of time.
