Although plenty of people will be gathering with friends and family for a meal on Thanksgiving day, there are also many who struggle to put food on the table. To help those in need and people facing food insecurity, the Mercer Street Friends Food Bank, located near Hamilton, recently distributed 4,000 turkeys over the course of two days.
The 4,000 turkeys provided enough food to feed around 60,000 people. To get the turkeys out to people who need them, the food bank partnered with more than 90 agencies.
Although feeding 60,000 people sounds like an accomplishment, the director of the Food Bank, Dr. Denalarie Johnson-Faniel, stresses that it is still not enough. Although she is grateful for the support the food bank has, she also noted that it has had a waiting list for the second year in succession.
Dr. Johnson-Faniel noted that the organization has a real need for more corporate sponsors and volunteers. Organizations that are looking for more support can use Business Cards to spread the word and encourage others to get in touch with them.
One of the sponsors of the Mercer Street Friends Food Bank is NRG, which provided the organization with 300 meal Bags, meant to supplement the turkeys and help families put a balanced dinner on the table. NRG also contributed 250 Gift Certificates.
On the volunteer front, the food bank has had Girl and Boy Scouts step forward, as well as young people who help out alongside their parents.
