The completion of the mural caps off a beautification project that began over the summer.
The young people at the community center are participants in the Isle Youth Institute Evening Program, the goal of which is to keep youth off of the streets during the after-school hours and give them supportive, educational, recreational, vocational, and outreach services. The program is intended for students in Trenton, Hamilton, and the surrounding areas.
Organizers of after-school programs often use Brochures to inform people of their programs and encourage more participation.
One of the components of the Evening Program is service learning, which integrates community service into an instructional course. The aim of service learning is to enrich the learning experience. The mural project with Leon Rainbow was just one example of service learning available with the program.
The students who worked on the mural were proud of their accomplishments. Speaking to the Trentonian, student Lashaye Fleming said:
"It was amazing seeing a blank wall turn into a wonderful piece of art, and we did it.”
