Boxes of Easter cheer sent to troops

The Groveville Tiger Den of Cub Scout Pack 87, which is just outside of Hamilton, recently spent an evening packing and decorating care packages for Easter for the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit to be shipped out to them this week, along with cards of thanks for their service.

They were motivated by the Girl Scouts of Whitehorse Yardville Service Unit Troop 71226, who have sent out 50 Boxes in the last four months to those serving in the forces.

Betty Wilson, the mother of a Special Forces Marine, came up with the idea to send goodies to her son’s battalion. Most likely she used flyer printing to write about the project, inspire the boys and list items the Cub Scouts could include in their packages. Amy Krupa, the den leader, agreed the project would be good for her Scouts and was glad when the boys wanted to show their appreciation and respect for the troops overseas and thank them with these gifts.

The 12 boys shopped with their parents to find the items that were included on the list. They collected those things they thought the Marines would need, such as soap, tuna fish, cotton swabs, a deck of cards, batteries, socks, beef jerky and cough drops. There was also a special treat for Easter—chocolate candy and jelly-filled Easter eggs.
