Architectural exhibit highlights career of five decades

The career of architect, designer and artist, Michael Graves, is about to be celebrated in a retrospective at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton.

Titled ‘Michael Graves: Past Prologue’, the exhibit will display his work that began 50 years ago, ranging from projects from the 1960s that attracted little attention, to architectural designs that are works in progress. Also featuring will be paintings and sculptures, furniture and product designs, and drawings that have not been seen before.

In addition, some of the architectural projects of most significance done by Graves, including the Team Disney Building in Burbank and the Denver Central Library, will be on display.

Graves has commented about the exhibit, saying that it has been “wonderful” to reminisce about 50 years of work, but he is most excited about the future of his practice and the results of the energetic collaboration of the disciplines in the firm.

The exhibit will be opening on October 18 as part of the Grounds For Sculpture exhibition season for the fall and winter. There will also be special talks, events, tours, and hands-on art-making workshops for families and adults, as well as a film series throughout the duration of the exhibit. The Grounds for Sculpture is most likely turning to creative flyer printing to spread the word about this unique exhibit to people in the area.
