A historic theatre in downtown Concord on Union Street, the District Exchange, is undergoing changes to become a destination for restaurants and shopping. Renovations began earlier this year to recreate the original mezzanine level of the building.
Unused space amounting to 20,000 square feet of the District Exchange will be repurposed for small businesses with multiple micro-retail spaces. There are four stores which have already signed leases for the space and include Barley Jean, a micro bakery that also makes treats for dogs, and Life is Sweet Candy Store.
The building, which is two stories high, will have two restaurants, with one on each floor, and 1,000 square feet of outdoor space. Kristen Harris Adamczuk, a property owner of the District Exchange, said that the goal is to make the building feel like an extension of Union Street.
Banner printing is often used at such locations to inform residents of such projects that are underway.
Mayor Bill Dusch said that this project will draw people back into the downtown area once the project is completed as downtown Concord is becoming an ideal location for the growth of small businesses. Flywheel Coworking and Cabarrus Economic Development opened The Cabarrus Center in 2020 in Concord. The center supports startups and keeps them local, so they do not relocate to Charlotte for more opportunities.
Concord will celebrate the grand reopening of the building and the downtown with a block party on May 3
