What's Happening in Charlotte, NC…

Runners go the extra few yards for Down syndrome

Individuals in Charlotte can take part in a celebration and a special race in just a couple of weeks’ time.

To celebrate World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Charlotte will host a 3-2-1 Dash for Down Syndrome and a free family festival. These activities are part of a worldwide day of celebratory events.

The Dash is a 5K race with a little something extra. After the 5K is completed, runners can dash an extra 0.11 miles to make the total distance 3.21 miles. This number is a nod to the fact that people with Down syndrome have 3 copies of the 21st chromosome. Runners will be timed after they complete 5K, with the extra 0.11 not being recorded.

Registration costs $35 and will increase to $40 on race day, while the fun run costs $20 or $25 on race day. The fundraiser will go to support educational programs for those with Down Syndrome.

The festival celebration will feature food, crafts, music, and a bounce house. By March 15, individuals should RSVP for the festival. Printing companies are sure to have been busy creating banners and other signs for the event.

Both events will take place on March 21 at 8835 Blakeney Professional Drive. The WDSD festival will go on from 10:00 am until noon, while the race event starts at 8:30 am.
