Development plan in process as Charlotte expands
Charlotte is currently undergoing a period of rapid growth, and city officials have decided to bring in some outside expert help to devise a development plan for the city.
A contract with the Urban Land Institute has been approved by the city council, and the group will use nationally recognized experts in the field to evaluate the area using data from such sources as interviews with residents, businesses, developers, and property owners. This will then be used this to help formulate a plan.
One of the questions that city planners hope the study can answer is whether or not it will be possible to transform SouthPark into a densely populated bike, pedestrian, and public transit area.
One tack that is being explored is increasing the number of high-density buildings by replacing aging ones that provide far less housing units. These would also include shops, services, and offices, and would offer a variety of ways to get around.
Once the report is complete, a catalog printing company will be able to prepare bound copies for the council and members of the public who would like to find out more about it.
Interim Planning Director Ed McKinney noted that the amount of investment and interest in the city is currently very high, so it will be important to have a plan in place to make the most from it.
