Charlotte invited to be part of Great Backyard Bird Count
Charlotte’s Wing Haven Garden and Bird Sanctuary will be one of the sites taking part in The Great Backyard Bird Count in early 2021.
Organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, the public can take part by enjoying a stroll through the grounds, recording any bird species they see. This data will be used by scientists to study migration patterns, population numbers and for other purposes, and a member of the Mecklenburg Audubon Society will be on hand to help with IDs and to answer questions.
To help make the function even more special, it will be taking a page from The Clarksons, who believed in the value of sharing their morning meal with the birds. A variety of light breakfast fare will be served, and coffee, water and hot chocolate will also be poured to help keep everyone warm.
All ages are encouraged to register for the bird count, and admission will be free for the event. Stationery printers can lend a hand by preparing tally sheets, simple guidebooks and other materials, and these can be given to each attendee to help them record what they see.
This stewardship activity, which will give the public a chance to spot common birds as well as “lifers,” will be running from February 12 to 15. The gardens and sanctuary are located at 260 Ridgewood Avenue in Charlotte.
