St. Louis-area high school musical performances will be judged next year, for the first time.
The Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation (FPACF), the Muny, and the Fabulous Fox Theatre have formed a joint sponsorship to create an awards process. The first ever St. Louis High School Musical Theatre Awards will be announced next year.
The awards will look at productions at no more than 30 schools, which must be located within 50 miles of the city. A link will appear on the awards’ website soon, and schools can apply for consideration as of January 1.
A panel comprised of three judges is then going to attend the productions at the chosen schools starting next fall. The judging panels will be drawn from a group of St. Louis performers, designers, arts executives, and musicians.
Awards will be given in 15 categories, many of which are similar to the Tony and Oscar awards. They include best actor and actress; best costume design; best set design; best supporting actor and actress; best direction; best musical direction; and best ensemble.
Awards also include cash prizes, scholarships, and an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City for the students who win Best Actor and Actress. The awards ceremony will be held at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis on May 28, 2017.
The three sponsoring organizations might create Flyers about the awards to encourage residents to attend the shows.
