St. Louis to begin June with celebration

In order to celebrate the renovations along its riverfront, St. Louis is throwing a party.

A number of organizations including the CityArchRiver Foundation, Great Rivers Greenway, and the City of St. Louis are inviting residents from the city and throughout the region to join them for a picnic.

The event, called ‘Picnic on the Riverfront’, will kick off the summer season of events in the city, and will be the biggest-ever community picnic held in St. Louis. The planned table is 2,016 feet long, with chairs included, and will celebrate the opening of the newly completed renovations of the riverfront area underneath the Gateway Arch. Great Rivers Greenway's executive director, Susan Trautman, described the renovated area as the “new front door” to the region.

After an official ribbon cutting ceremony, picnickers will be encouraged to explore the Mississippi Greenway, listen to music by local bands, participate in educational activities that are suitable for all ages, and buy delicious food from food trucks and additional vendors.

The picnic starts at 5:00 pm on June 2, with the ribbon cutting followed by remarks and dinner at 6:15 pm. People can either bring their own food or patronize the trucks. An aerial photo will be taken of all attendees, and the night winds up with a fireworks display, scheduled for 8:30 pm.

City officials might consider designing massive Banners to decorate the Arch to join in the fun.
