St. Louis gets ready for Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras 2017 is not until the end of February, but St. Louis has already started celebrating. Several events are over, but there is more fun to come.

Upcoming events include the Mayor's Mardi Gras Ball, the Grand Parade, and the High Heel Drag Race. The ball is a black-tie evening that takes place in the City Hall's rotunda. Hosted by the Mardi Gras Foundation, the event is a fundraiser for the organization, which makes community grants to improve downtown and Soulard.

The Grand Parade is the biggest such event in the Midwest. It starts near Busch Stadium and meanders through the downtown area, finally ending up at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery. More than 100 floats are scheduled to appear, and people on the floats will toss beads and other goodies to spectators.

After the parade comes the High Heel Drag Race, in which performers in drag run in high heels. This year, there's an “all genders” race, where any kind of footwear is acceptable, as well as a “boys in heels” race. In this heat, men need heels, but do not have to wear a dress. This event kicks off from Nadine's Gin Joint on South Twelfth Street.

The Mardi Gras Ball is scheduled for this Friday, February 24, beginning at 7:00 pm. The Grand Parade is set for 11:00 am this Saturday and the High Heel Drag Race begins at 3:00 pm the same day.
