Southwest adds St. Louis to Cancun service
On May 18, Southwest Airlines announced it will be flying directly to Cancun, Mexico from St. Louis, beginning this fall, according to an article in the Riverfront Times.
Currently, the flights are scheduled for Saturdays but the schedule will almost certain expand. Prices start at $149 for a one-way flight.
Previously, Southwest announced direct flights between St. Louis's Lambert International Airport and Pensacola, Florida, as well as South Carolina.
The increase in flights means that Southwest will expand its gates in Terminal 2. The airport reveals that it has been working with the airline to “renovate and reopen” a section of four gates, and will be adding gates E34 to E40 to the 13 Southwest operates at present. Adding Cancun to its destinations means St. Louis is one of only 15 airports from which Southwest flies to international destinations.
Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge, the airport director, said there has been a lot of demand for Southwest recently, and the facility is excited about adding another international flight.
The Cancun direct flights start November 11, and will be in effect at least until January 7, 2018. Southwest has not released any further information for flights after that date, but it is likely the service will be expanded. Flights to Florida and South Carolina start in just over a week’s time on June 4.
