North St. Louis chosen as site for federal agency

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), which employs 3,000 people, has outgrown its long-time home, and is planning to move to new quarters.

Since 1942, the agency has been located in St. Louis, operating from a site near the Anheuser Busch Brewery, but four new location have been under consideration: Mehlville or Fenton, both in St. Louis County; Scott Air Force Base, in St. Clair County in Illinois; and North St. Louis, which proved to be its eventual choice.

The agency's new site comprises 99 acres, and it is estimated construction will cost $1.75bn, and provide jobs for 5,200 construction workers.

Illinois offered the agency the land for free if it would move to the site in St. Clair County, and Missouri officials matched the offer. A statement from the NGA said that it had carefully considered all four locations with regard not only to the incentives offered, but also the impact construction would have on the area. The agency added that the acreage in St. Louis offers the professional, academic, and technological resources it needs to perform its duties at the highest level.

Moving the agency to the new site is expected to have a massive, positive economic impact on the area. As the new site nears completion, management may want to consider working with stationery printers to create letterheads that reflect the new location.
