Local garden prepares for growth

The Missouri Botanical Garden is getting set to expand, it was confirmed last week.

According to Andrew Wyatt, who is the vice president of Horticultural & Living Collections, the garden features some 16,228 different plants in its current collections, and is getting crowded. The organization is planning to add a 6.5-acre nursery in south St. Louis.

According to Wyatt, the Oertli family donated property to the project. Less than two minutes from the garden itself, the property is located in the Tower Grove South area, off Morganford. The garden hopes to complete phase one, making the nursery functional, by this October. It also hopes to be growing plants in the new nursery by the end of 2016.

Wyatt says the garden will relocate all its hearty plant production to the new site, which will enable it to develop shrubs and trees that can thrive in zones six and seven. This in turn means the garden will have a greater diversity in its plants. Wyatt is looking forward especially to including what he calls “wow plants” in the collections, in that people might never have seen them before.

The public cannot see the nursery except on a tour, but those visitors who choose to go there can learn how the garden grows its 16,000 different plants.

The garden's management might like to create a new brochure that describes the nursery in detail, and make it available to visitors.
