A recent event helped over 1,500 people from St. Louis and the surrounding area to sign up for a program that offers them assistance in paying their utility bills.
The Winterizing Utility Forum, which was part of the Heat up St. Louis initiative, saw more than 70 volunteers and at least a dozen not-for-profit organizations come out to help seniors and low income families apply for the program, which will help to ensure that they do not have their utilities cut off during the cold months of winter.
According to organizer and CEO of Heat up St. Louis, Gentry Trotter, those who came out to apply had already been prescreened and given an appointment by using the initiative’s website. He noted that this can provide vital help to those who have a fixed or low income and who find it difficult to make their utility payments. He remarked that they will often feel overwhelmed and avoid paying them. A company that produces ad specialties can create items like Pens, magnets, and others small tokens with the programs contact information on them to be given out to the crowd.
Mr. Trotter went on to say that as much as $500,000 will be distributed to those who came out to the event. Much of this comes from utility companies, the city and county of St. Louis and also private donations.
