Garden reveals its 2017 plans

The Missouri Botanical Garden announced that next summer, it will have a new exhibit for guests to enjoy.

The Garden will be displaying the work of Craig Mitchell Smith, a glass artist, in a display titled ‘Garden of Glass’. Smith is making 30 displays specifically to be displayed in the garden.

Smith is kiln-firing his glass rather than blowing it, which is a technique for which he is known. Blown glass is created by a craftsman who gathers a blob of molten glass on the end of a blowpipe, and blows air into it. The glass is rolled, swung, or shaped with tools.

Artists like Smith who kiln-fire their pieces fuse their glass in various ways, resulting in pieces that look layered. Fused glass is often called warm glass, kiln-glass, or kiln-formed, since it is created in the kiln, not with a blowpipe.

The Climatron, the Garden’s geodesic dome, will house most of the pieces, while others will be displayed on the grounds. Officials advise that the best time to see them is at night, so special events are planned for the evenings. On Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, food and drink will be for sale, and live entertainment will be provided.

The Smith exhibit runs May 13 to August 13, 2017. Organizations like these can benefit by creating brochures for visitors that explain special exhibits. They can include photos to enhance the material.
