Beltsville to host agricultural workshop

An important workshop on soil moisture is coming up in Beltsville.

The 2023 National Soil Moisture Workshop will take place in person, with a limited option to attend virtually. The host is the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS).

The workshop has three main goals: to show the latest research and innovative concepts dealing with monitoring soil moisture; and to showcase new applications for using data about soil moisture and identify research needs oriented toward applications. The final aim of the sessions is to encourage progress toward bringing the vision of the Forest Soil Moisture Monitoring Network and the National Coordinated Soil Moisture Monitoring Network to fruition. Events like this are perfect for networking and exchanging Business Cards.

The first day is a Soil Moisture Field School, where participants work at the USDA ARS field site, taking part in a hands-on session on the installation and operation of soil moisture measuring.

The next two days are a National Soil Moisture Workshop, which includes presentations and a roundtable discussion on collecting and reporting soil moisture data.

The final day is the Forest Soil Moisture Monitoring Special Session, in which the U.S. Forest Service will discuss its plan to monitor soil moisture in the national forests. It will share research at this time, including the best way to monitor this moisture.

This is the workshop’s 14th consecutive year, and is a four-day event spanning August 14, 15, 16, and 17 at the National Agricultural Library, 10301 Baltimore Ave #115 in Beltsville.
