The May meeting for the Women’s Club of Inverness (WCI) comes at the end of each membership year, and recently provided an opportunity for the club to reflect on the year’s accomplishments, award the latest scholarships, and set its goals for 2019-2020.
It was revealed at the meeting that 2018-2019 proved to be one of the club’s most successful years. It was able to donate more than $70,000 to the community in the form of grants and scholarships. The WCI has given more than $400,000’s worth of scholarships since its inception and has helped many students achieve their dreams of attaining higher education. A total of 15 students were granted scholarships in the 2018-2019 membership year.
This year’s Jessalyn Nicklas Memorial Scholarship was granted to Madiha Amir from Hoffman Estates. Amir graduated with a 4.919 GPA and is going to study Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin. The winner of the Raisa Bratkiv Memorial Scholarship was Steffi Chen who has proven her proficiency in athletics, music and academics. Steffi will go on to the University of Illinois to study Electrical Engineering.
Winners are chosen based on several factors which include financial need, academic achievement and the content of a personal essay.
Once the scholarship winners were announced, the board elected new officers for 2019-2021. Jennifer DeFranco’s new Business Cards will read ‘Vice President’, while Karen Kallman was elected to the role of Treasurer.
