Prairie dedicated to late professor

Harper College has decided to dedicate a prairie on the school’s grounds in honor of a late professor.

Craig Stettner, who taught biology at Harper College, passed away on Christmas Day last year while on holiday in Costa Rica with his family. As a member of the school’s biology department and the lead advisor for the environmental club, he is credited with helping the school maintain the prairie at the Palatine Campus in Hoffman Estates. Stettner was known to visit the prairie often, where he assisted with habitat restoration, overlooked the controlled burns held every year, and cleared the trails of trash and debris.

The memorial service where the prairie was officially dedicated in his honor was held on September 19. Members of his family, as well as friends, colleagues, and students, were in attendance at the event where they released milkweed seeds into the air. The milkweed plant, when it blooms, is known to attract monarch butterflies, which will add to the prairie’s aesthetic appeal. Print shops are often visited in such situations so as to have custom plaques and Signs printed and placed on site.

The idea of commemorating the prairie in the late Stettner’s honor came from his former students as well as the faculty. They put in an official request and it was not until April that the board of trustees gave their approval.
