Although Barack Obama’s presidential term lasts for three more months, officials will begin moving his White House papers to their new home this month.
Commercial trucks will move gifts, artifacts, and documents that were amassed during President Obama’s term to a temporary home in Hoffman Estates. The military takes responsibility for the bulk of the move.
Troops currently in the capital will take papers and artifacts currently stored in the National Archives and Records Administration, pack them into semitractor-trailers, and start the 700-mile trip to their new home. The move is being overseen by Air Force logistician Lt. Colonel Vianesa Vargas, who was also present in an official capacity at Obama’s inauguration in 2009.
The President’s papers will be stored at the temporary facility in Hoffman Estates as his electronic and paper trail are processed. His library is expected to open in 2021, on the South Side of Chicago. In the intervening years, archivists will work to preserve, digitize, and organize the materials. The move will not be completed until after the inauguration of the new president on January 20.
Presidential libraries often use Banners to direct patrons to different exhibits and sections, as well as printed labels on specific items to give context and history to the displays. Vargas is already planning a trip to the library when it opens with her husband and children.
