Home horticulturists have practiced seed saving for centuries, using these techniques to develop new cultivars and preserve ones they wish to keep, and a Hoffman Estates activity will teach these to a new set of savers.
Volunteers will soon be fanning out across Charlemagne Park for a morning of seed saving, and all ages are welcome to roll up their sleeves and join the fun. The session will run for two hours, and it can be a fun way to get started with environmental stewardship.
The attendees will learn how to properly collect, label and store wildflower seeds for future use, and they will also discover why this is important. The tools for the task at hand, including gloves, will be provided. Facilitators will be on hand to help, and HE Parks, which has organized the activity, has requested that those interested sign up as far in advance as possible. Plus there's no fee being charged.
Volunteering can be a very rewarding experience and also offers the chance to learn skills and meet others who share the same interest. Stationery printers can prepare everything from application Forms to safety and liability waivers for a not-for-profit group.
Hoffman Estate’s home horticulturalists and anyone else who would like to get started at seed saving are welcome to register for this activity now. It's scheduled for October 11th, and will start at 8:00 am.
