To help veterans readjust to civilian life, AMITA Health Behavioral Health Hospital and the Illinois Psychological Association Military section will present a conference entitled ‘When Trauma Comes Home’ later this week in Hoffman Estates.
Conference topics will include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic grief, and accessing services through the VA. Multiple studies have shown that many veterans experience PTSD, brain injury, and suicidal thoughts, but that proper support can help them overcome these and related challenges.
AMITA Health Behavioral Health Hospital in Hoffman Estates has employed a wartime simulator called Virtual Iraq to help veterans cope with PTSD. The simulator uses sights, sounds, and smells from the soldier's wartime experience and helps him or her learn how to tolerate certain triggers.
Explaining the purpose of the simulator, Col. Jeffrey Yarvis, Ph.D., who is a published social worker and military scholar, said:
"The mindset that keeps you alive in battle might be socially and behaviorally hazardous at home."
The free conference will take place this Friday, November 20, from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm at NIU-Hoffman Estates. Thus far, 250 people from the Chicago area are registered, according to Steve Hunter, business development director of AMITA Health, more people are on the wait list. He said that organizers are hoping they can accommodate everyone who has seen Flyers, articles, and other mentions of the event.
Call Diamond Sutton at 847-755-3245 to be added to the list.
