Patricia Barch, the Literacy Coordinator off the Schaumburg Township District Library near Hoffman Estates, was awarded a plaque by the United States Department of Homeland Security and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on Friday, September 18.
This was given to her for work in starting and hosting United States naturalization ceremonies at the library.
The first such plaque was awarded in 2011 and this event marked the last official involvement for Barch, as she plans to retire at the end of this year.
The American Legion Post 1983 of Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates opened the ceremony with the Presentation of Colors. Then there were welcome speeches from the branch chief of the USCIS, Ruth Jonen, President of the Library Board, and a streaming video from President Barack Obama.
The room was filled with friends and family offering their support, and decorated in a patriotic theme. A total of 73 candidates for citizenship from around 30 nations took the Naturalization Oath of the United States, after which they gave a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance for the first time. Photos were then taken and many posed in front of the U.S. flags. A reception with beverages and snacks was held afterwards.
Poster printing may have been used to create Posters commemorating this special event so that the new citizens could take them home to remember the day.
