Vacant Gurnee spot snapped up by Marianos
Mariano's Markets is taking over 11 Dominick’s stores, including one on Grand Avenue in Gurnee.
People were lining up outside the store as early as 5:30 am to explore the new supermarket, which was set to open at 6:00 am on July 1.
Employees wearing white shirts and ties went in to get ready for the day, while flags flew and lights flashed outside as early-bird shoppers gathered in front of the store.
According to MySuburbanLife.com, Linda Santiago had come from nearby Waukegan, getting there early to beat the crowds. Gurnee resident Teresa Johnson said she liked to shop early and added that she, as well as Santiago, had been to the Libertyville Mariano's and liked the market. Santiago called it a “really nice store”.
Vilma Gebeck owns a Great Clips for Hair franchise near the new market, and was there to see what Mariano's had to offer. She was glad the Dominick’s had only been vacant a short time, since having the store empty had hurt her business.
More customers joined the group, and a manager opened the store at 5:46 am, 14 minutes early. Employees welcomed the shoppers, serving samples and handing out maps of the store. Although only nine people enjoyed the early opening, dozens more arrived by 6:00 am.
Store management might consider working with a flyer printing service to create handouts, including coupons, to be distributed near the store, inviting people to explore the new market.
