What's Happening in Waukegan, IL…

Music in the air in Gurnee area

Gurnee residents who would like to sooth their souls with music will have that chance soon.

The Waukegan Symphony Orchestra is playing a program it calls Magnificent Suites, with the suites in question being Bizet and Prokofiev. A concerto by Mozart is also on the program, with guest soloist Alex Liedtke.

First up on the program is Prokofiev's “Suite from Lt. Kijé,” which is a favorite in concert halls the world over, and will no doubt be familiar to audiences. It comprises five movements.

The suite is actually the soundtrack to a film, Lieutenant Kijé, which was made in 1933-1934 at Leningrad's Belgoskino studios. The film was released worldwide, and got a favorable review from The New York Times.

Oboist Alex Liedtke will round out the first half of the program playing Mozart's Oboe Concerto. A Chicago native, Liedtke played in the Chicago Youth Symphony when he was in high school. He has also been the principal oboist of the Fayetteville, North Carolina, Symphony Orchestra.

Suites 1 and 2 from L'Arlesienne by Bizet will comprise the second half of the evening. Although probably best known for his opera Carmen, these Bizet melodies are familiar, and played frequently.

The concert is set for March 15, from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm, at Orlin Trapp Auditorium on Brookside Avenue in Waukegan, a short distance from Gurnee. Poster printing is frequently used to publicize events like this.
