Gurnees Six Flags to load up on lunchtime favorites

Six Flags Great America, the popular theme park in Gurnee, is working with the Northern Illinois Food Bank to make a difference to Illinois residents with a two-day drive taking place next weekend.

Great America is aiming to assist students who need help getting lunches. To that end, it has decided to collect two staples of every kid’s lunch - peanut butter and jelly. One in five children in Northern Illinois faces food insecurity, a term defined to mean that a person doesn’t have reliable access to nutritious, affordable food in great enough quantities to keep him healthy.

Since the focus is on students’ lunches, the park will give a coupon for $20 off the general admission price to anyone who brings both a jar of jelly and a jar of peanut butter to the park on either September 6 or 7. All the food collected will go to the food bank, and if people would rather make a cash donation to the food bank, they may do so, and receive the same coupon. The coupon is valid the same days as the collection.
According to food bank statistics, approximately 425,000 people in northern Illinois are going hungry. Six Flags could work with a banner printing company to create a banner to display over the collection point, urging people to donate and addressing the need for generosity.
