Gurnee's Six Flags raises funds for Special Olympics

On September 27, Six Flags Great America and Special Olympics joined forces for the Coaster Challenge to generate money for Special Olympics Illinois.

Participants were treated to rides on the park's roller coasters depending on how much money they were able to raise.

Those who raised $100 were eligible for a 5K ride, or 16,405 feet. Those who made it to the ‘Goliath’ class were those who were able to raise $250. They rode the equivalent of a 10K, or 32,810 feet.

The really enthusiastic fundraisers went after the ‘Marathon’ title. If they managed to raise $1,000, they were able to ride the entire marathon distance of 26.2 miles. Participants were given scorecards, which they had stamped as they got off each ride. Park employees totaled up the distances ridden.

The benefits for those who took part in the fundraising effort included a large number of ‘thank you’ gifts, depending on how much money they raised. At the least, participants got free park admission, a free breakfast, an official shirt commemorating the event, a tracking pass, and a medal awarded upon completion.

Six Flags officials might contact a newsletter printing company to have a piece written about the event. They could distribute it to participants and others, reflecting on the event and asking them to remember to come back next year.
