What's Happening in Waukegan, IL…

Gurnee's school on the run once again

For the sixth year, the Woodland PTA sponsored the ROAR Run that recently took place at the Woodland Elementary School in Gurnee.

ROAR is the acronym for ‘Respectful, Ownership, Accepting and Ready’, and reflects the fact that Woodland School District 50 educates children from widely varying economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Funds raised by participants go directly to the district to help support libraries, teacher grants, cultural arts assemblies, scholarships, and other programs.

All Woodland parents and students were eligible to take part in the event. In addition there was a 5K run/walk and a one-mile run/walk. The staff relays were truly “old school” this time, offering a sponge bucket race, a potato sack race, a human wheelbarrow race, and a three-legged race.

Attendees who cheered on their favorite racers were treated to music, and food trucks were on hand as well. Bernadette Marty, the co-chairwoman of the event, said it drew the biggest turnout in several years, and she and the other organizers were delighted to see the increase in support for the PTA and its programs.

Among the participants were Kristi Blasius, the school's assistant principal, as well as Laura Tieman, who is a math specialist. Winners in all age groups received awards, with all the proceeds going to the PTA.

Outdoor events are great places for organizers to use colorful banners as decorations for the venue.
