Gurnee wants to revitalize underperforming avenue

Gurnee is trying again to find a solution to the East Grand Avenue problem.

Grand Avenue, east of Route 41, has been problematic for Gurnee for years. The thoroughfare is a mix of overhead power lines, signs of non-standard height, and empty stores. This part of the street is a direct contrast to the section of the street on the other side of the tollway. Attempts by Gurnee to improve the stretch date back to 1999, when a consultant suggested one solution to help would be to bury the power lines; a plan that was approved by never instituted.

Village trustees voted February 8 to pay Urban Land Institute(ULI) $15,000, if ULI accepts the village's application for help in generating ideas for the project. Kristina Kovarik, Gurnee's mayor, hopes the application will be ready by the end of the week, and stressed Gurnee will not pay anything if ULI rejects it.

Urban Land Institute is a nonprofit organization that works with experts in the private sector to help in creating and maintaining lively communities around the globe. If ULI approves Gurnee's application, it will send experts to the village for two days to help generate ideas for improving the East Grand Avenue corridor.

Village officials might consider working with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents, asking them for their ideas about the avenue.
