Gurnee to offer mental health first aid training

The YWCA Lake County in Gurnee will be hosting a course in May on helping youths who are impacted by mental illness.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training is a one-day program that teaches people how to identify and assist those with mental illness. Several topics will be discussed at the training session, including trauma, anxiety, and mood disorders. Those taking part will also learn about the proper course of action to take when someone is experiencing a panic attack and hallucinations. The class uses activities and real-life scenarios to keep students engaged in the material.

The sponsor for the event is the Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center. The organization has several branches, such as the Grand Avenue Health Center, Belvidere Medical Building, and North Chicago Health Center. The department is public health accredited and state certified. Mark Pfister is the executive director of the department. The organization's main goal is to achieve the highest level of health for those who live, work, and play in Lake County.

The training session will be held on Monday, May 8 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. No payment is needed to register for the health department's course. Only those who live or work in Lake County will be allowed to sign up for the mental health class. Organizations that coordinate lessons like these may use brochure printing to ensure all students have materials they can take home.
