Gurnee to be the site of the first 4DX theater in Chicagoland
The first 4DX theater in the Chicago area is slated to open in Gurnee.
Officials from Korea-based CJ 4DPLEX and Marcus Theatres said the facility, which has special effects including motion and scents to enhance the experience, will open later this fall.
The theater is at 6144 Grand Avenue, in the Gurnee Mills shopping center. ‘4DX’ is the name given to four-dimension technology, which is used to enhance blockbuster action films by providing the audience with special effects like fog, wind, lightning, rain, odors, and vibrating seats.
There are other 4DX houses in the Midwest, including one in the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. However, this is the first time a movie house with the 4DX brand is opening in the region.
The Korean brand made its U.S. debut in Los Angeles last year. A number of films have been shown in 4DX theaters already, including ‘Furious 7’, ‘Jurassic World’, ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’, and ‘Avengers - Age of Ultron’.
The target date for the theater's opening is some time in November. When the movie house opens, managers could work with a banner printing company to create festive banners to hang in the lobby, celebrating the opening. The theater could also work with a flyer printing company on a handout, including a coupon, for special admission to intrigue potential visitors.
