Gurnee rolls out responsible waste disposal program

Gurnee residents who need to get rid of household chemical waste will have a chance to do so very soon.

The city has announced the times and dates for waste collection, which is a free service for residents of Illinois. An appointment is needed.

The agency will accept a large variety of household waste products, including aerosols of all types and automotive products such as oil, gas, antifreeze, and brake fluid); Insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers are accepted, as are personal care items such as nail polish and shampoo. Batteries can also be accepted, though residents should check that they are not alkaline or lead acid.

The facility will not accept agricultural chemicals or any kind of medical waste, and items like smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should also be kept away from the collections. It will also refuse any commercial, institutional, or business waste. For a complete list of items that may be discarded, please see the Solid Waste Agency's website.

Gurnee officials might consider working with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for residents, listing the acceptable and non-acceptable items, and the collection dates. Waste will be collected at the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County, which is located at 1311 North Estes Street, in Gurnee, this Saturday, January 10. A second collection will follow on Monday, January 26.
