Gurnee police on the lookout for academy recruits

The Gurnee police are currently inviting interested residents to participate in the Citizen Police Academy that begins late in August.

The academy comprises 36 hours of instruction, both in class and hands-on, that are designed to help the public understand the policies, practices, and procedures under which the police department operates. The classes are held in three-hour blocks over a twelve-week period.

Classes provide insight into all facets of police operations, including the process of hiring and training, patrol duty, investigations, and the 911 call center. Whenever possible, hands-on participation is included.

Records from the April 2016 class gives some insight into what students can expect this fall. There were talks by police officers about their patrol duties, one of which included a discussion of DUI stops. Students in this class took part in a demonstration of a field sobriety test. They were given special goggles to wear that simulate the effect of drugs or alcohol. Students were surprised to find they could hardly stand up, let alone pass the tests.

People interested in attending the upcoming class must be at least eighteen years old, and not have been convicted of a felony. Students need to register by this Friday, August 12. The academy begins on August 25.

Agencies like these can benefit by working with flyer printing companies, which can create informative materials for wide distribution to reach potentially interested parties.
