Great Wolf buys Gurnee's KeyLime Cove

On April 19, the last guests checked out of KeyLime Cove in Gurnee, ending the resort's nine-year operation in the village, according to an article in The Herald.

The property has been purchased by Great Wolf Resorts, Inc., which plans to spend about a year renovating it before reopening it as a Great Wolf Lodge.

A spokesman for Great Wolf Resorts, Jason Lasecki, said renovations would begin “almost immediately”. The company is expected to invest $65m or more on the remodeling project, including renovating parts of the property, and expanding others with new construction. In total, including the purchase price, Great Wolf will spend about $100m on opening the new lodge.

As part of the renovation, Great Wolf will convert the resort from the tropical theme used by KeyLime to its signature look, which it bases on the Northwoods. Great Wolf also plans to expand the resort's indoor water park by about 20,000 square feet, and add more shopping. It is also planning to build a water park outdoors, and create what it calls “family-themed” suites. However, it does not plan to increase the number of hotel rooms.

Kristina Kovarik, Gurnee's mayor, is happy to see Great Wolf take over, which she believes will benefit both the village and other area attractions, such as Six Flags Great America. The resort should open in Summer 2018.
