Pelican Island has plenty on the bill

This year, the annual Pelican Island Wildlife Festival is celebrating the 110th anniversary of the national wildlife refuge. It promises to offer outdoor activities and entertainment that will appeal to each person in the family. This popular festival attracts at least 8,000 people from all over south Florida each year.

The festival, which is presented by the Pelican Island Preservation Society, the US Fish and Wildlife Services, and the City of Sebastian, will feature wildlife shows, kayaking demonstrations and activities, environmental exhibits, food vendors, boat tours, a DJ, an amateur photo contest, historical reenactments, birding tours, arts and crafts exhibits, and a raffle for a kayak. It should be a great day out for those who are interested in outdoor activities, the environment, or the natural world - not to mention a chance to learn about the Pelican Island refuge.

Environmental organizations or businesses who wish to showcase their services or products can rent a booth. The fees are free for government agencies, $35 for non-profit organizations, $80 for artists and crafters, or $105 for commercial companies. No doubt these organizations will come from all over the area, including nearby Vero Beach. They will likely be working with local printing companies to design and create educational literature to hand out to passers-by.

The 21st Pelican Island Wildlife Festival will take place at Riverview Park in Sebastian on March 16 from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. Admission is free, although kayaking and boat tours involve an extra cost.
