North Miami takes steps to conserve section of local lake

At a recent city council meeting, North Miami Beach approved proposal that will see a section of a local lake be designated as a conservation area.

Local citizens and conservation groups had voiced their concerns about the plans a developer had that would see the construction of 29 high end floating homes on Maule Lake, and the council felt that the best course of action would be to deem part of it off-limits to development.

Prior to this, the lake, which was formerly a rock quarry, was not zoned. Under the new rules, it will now be zoned as “water”. It is hoped that this will make things clear when it comes to future use of the area.

A second council vote will be required for the new zoning policies to be adopted. A poster printing firm can create a variety of visual aids that can help to ensure the council members have all the information they need in order to make their decision.

The proposal for the development was made by a Dutch based firm. The homes would cost approximately $12.5 million each and all together, they would cover an area of 38 acres.

The mayor noted that this action was well overdue, and that it will help to ensure that the “beautiful piece of water” will remain that way for the future.
