North Miami Beach to celebrate Hispanic culture

The city of North Miami Beach will hold a special digital event to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month, highlighting the work done by local restaurants.

The event, called “Tastes & Traditions: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month” is a project of the Multi-Cultural Committee, headed up by Vice Mayor Barbara Kramer. The digital event will be broadcast over Zoom and feature guest panelists from local restaurants like CAO Bakery, Merkado 31 and Tropics Cafe. Each restaurant represents a country or region showing the breadth of Latin America, from Mexico to Argentina. The discussion could feature everything from cooking tips to stories about getting started in a competitive Florida restaurant market.

Hispanic Heritage Month is held from September 15 to October 15, and is designed to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States. The month is typically celebrated with events ranging from the El Barrio Latin Jazz festival in the Bronx to, the Latino Short Film Festival in California.

This year, ongoing social distancing measures could lead to more virtual celebrations like Tastes and Traditions. These digital events still use colorful poster printing and other tools to advertise, with the City of North Miami Beach using a poster design that includes images of the restaurants’ food in small circles.

Tastes and Traditions will take place via Zoom on the evening of October 1.
