Miami School stands strong despite blaze

A minor early morning fire at the New World School of the Arts did not prevent school from being held the next day, but did delay a planned art show.

In the early hours of January 13, a small electrical fire ignited in an art gallery on the ground floor of a downtown Miami magnet school, the New World School of the Arts. Damage was minimal as the fire was contained by the school’s sprinkler system until firefighters arrived and extinguished it.

Although the fire was limited to the area where it started, anxious students upon arriving later that morning discovered that many of the art projects sustained water and smoke damage. Like the student’s art projects, damage to the school was primarily the result of water and smoke.

Firefighters credit the school’s sprinkler system with saving it from more extensive damage. When companies that sell fire protection systems wish to promote their product, this is the type of event they might wish to have their brochure printer include.

The fashion show the school had scheduled for Friday, January 16, 2015 will be rescheduled to give students ample time to recreate their designs.

The New World School of the Arts is one of the first schools to have a first dual-enrollment program. It is a public magnet high school as well as a college affiliated with the University of Florida and Miami-Dade College.
