Arsht Center announces grants for virtual exhibition

The Miami area’s Adrienne Arsht Center has announced its first ever online commissioning project, in which at least 20 local performance artists can obtain grants for projects dealing with the current moment.

The project will be part of the Heart of Art series, and will be open to artists in diverse genres from Miami-Dade County, including places like North Miami Beach and Coral Gables. The winners will be part of a virtual exhibition called “Art in the Time of Coronavirus”, inviting participants to respond to the ongoing pandemic and changes to society. The submission must be a video, but can take many Forms, such as dance, music, monologue, graphic design, animation, and digital media.

Each successful Heart of Art applicant will receive a $1,000 grant to help make their vision into reality. The initiative will have a rolling deadline, so that works will be posted throughout the late summer. The Arsht Center traditionally hosts theater, music, and other events, including a scheduled presidential debate this fall. Events like these are typically advertised through tools like poster printing, even in cases where they are moving online.

The Heart of Art grant process is still ongoing, with the next deadline being next Monday, July 13. Winning selections will be posted on the Arsht Center’s website and promoted through its social media channels.
