Miami to offer sustainability-centered Halloween activities

This October, Miami will hold the Plastic is Scary: Beach Cleanup, Eco Walk & Halloween Costume Swap for anyone in the area interested in combining eco-conservation and sustainability with their Halloween festivities.

Presented by MORAES, Earth Breeze, and Debris Free Oceans, the event will take place at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. This downtown Miami beach encompasses wetlands, hiking trails, a boardwalk, concessions, and picnic areas. Organizers aim to put a sustainability twist on typical Halloween activities, offering an alternative experience for those wishing to be more intentional with their actions.

Attendees will participate in a beach cleanup, removing litter along the shoreline and earning volunteer service hours. They can also participate in a costume swap in which they exchange gently used Halloween costumes. MORAES, a local nonprofit focused on marine science and conservation, will lead an eco-walk exploring coastal habitats, local wildlife, native and invasive plants, and a seasonal sea turtle activity.

Volunteer activities such as this are often advertised throughout the community on Flyers that can either be handed out or affixed to storefronts or bulletin boards. Organizers may seek out their local flyer printing services to prepare such materials.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 10 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Historic Virginia Key Beach Park is at 4020 Virginia Beach Drive, Miami. The event is free, but advanced registration is required.
