Educational series on urban food production to return to Davie

Those interested in sustainable urban food production can attend a series of classes starting in October at a local university in Davie.

The Sustainable Urban Food Production Course is a program that educates students about creating operations of local food production. The classes will provide attendees with an overview of this developing industry and prepare them for running their own businesses. Many types of audiences can benefit from the program, including teachers, community gardeners, and urban farmers. People have the option to attend these lessons online or in person.

Those in the program will take six classes that focus on specific topics in urban food production. Students can learn about creating marketing plans, good management practices, and how to integrate technology on urban farms. There will also be a field tour where participants can see an urban food production system. The program is co-organized by Dr. Jiangxio Qiu, Lorna Bravo, and Jessical Ryals. Classes will be at the UF/IFAS Extension in Davie.

The urban food production course will be held every Monday from October 6 to November 10. Each lesson lasts from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Those interested in attending the program in person may pay $175. Students who wish to access the online livestreams can pay $150 instead. The cost will include training materials and light refreshments. Universities that offer similar programs may use brochure printing to make informative take-home materials for their students.
