The Marshall Tucker Band was founded in 1972 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, There never was a Marshall Tucker in the band, although he was a real person—a blind piano tuner who was from Columbia, South Carolina. The band is known for mixing jazz, country, and the blues into a unique sound.
They dropped their debut album, “The Marshall Tucker Band,” in 1973, on Capricorn Records, and have continued to tour and record since the beginning, although there have been numerous changes to the lineup. Today, Doug Gray is the only original band member still actively performing.
One of the founders, Tommy Caldwell, described the group as a progressive country outfit, noting that the band laid down a foundation of country music riffs and structures, and then added jazz improvisation on top. Throughout their career, the group has incorporated various sounds, most often jazz, country, and blues, but also sometimes including rock and roll, folk, gospel, R&B, psychedelic, and boogie. This wildly eclectic mix keeps the sound fresh. A concert review says:
