Centennial's Goodson Recreation Center has three new artworks for the public to enjoy. The work was installed July 9th, with two of the sculptors on hand for the event.
Don Orr is the creator of ‘Nemesis’, a 95-pound free-form sculpture made up of layers of copper wire and steel. He says the name is appropriate considering the trouble he had with the work, which took him almost six weeks to finish.
Nemesis sits at the entry to the center, and across from it is ‘Epic II’, by Mike Cody and Mike Juarez. Epic II is an obelisk covered in bits of pottery, glass, stone and china, which makes it sparkle in the sun. The artists say the shape of the obelisk conveys a sense of security and strength, and add that many of the materials they used are recycled.
‘Rocky Mountains Tag’ by Bill Noland, is a whimsical look at two does playing together. This work is also near the entrance, located in a natural setting.
The sculptures will remain at Goodson for a year as part of the South Suburban Parks and Recreation (SSPR) Art-On-Loan program. Art is chosen by competition, with final approval going to SSPR's board of directors.
The center's management might work with brochure printers to create a handout for visitors describing the artists and their works.
